Unit 1 - P1

Explain how internal and external factors affect the UK inbound and domestic tourism.Trends and factors

In this assignment I will be reviewing the trends and factors that are currently affecting the travel and tourism sector in either a positive or negative manner. Trends are something that becomes popular within mainstream society over a long period of time. Factors are something that influences and contributes to a result. There are many trends which are currently affecting the tourism industry however I will only talk about three which I feel is having a massive impact, these are: increased frequency of holidays, holiday home ownership and growth and expansion of regional airports. Just like trends, there are many factors also affecting the industry, I will also talk about three: Natural disasters, Terrorism and health warnings.

Increased frequency of holidays
As said, trends occur over long periods of time and could contribute in a positive or negative way. Increased frequency of holidays is a positive trend as it is making the tourism industry boom. This is because people are taking more holidays in a year than saving for one big holiday every year or every other year. People are also taking weekend breaks and short city breaks as it is cheaper and sometimes just want a break from everyday life and spend a weekend doing something different, they are also able to do this because they have more disposable income and more time off of work, and if they go for a short break over a bank holiday period, they will not lose holiday days for work and will still get paid.
There is an increased frequency of holidays because there are cheaper flights and accommodation providers and there is more competition between the operators which also results in reduced holiday prices

Holiday home ownership
The second trend is holiday home ownership; this has a positive and negative impact on the sector. The positive impact is for the airline companies, this is because the people who own a holiday home abroad fly out a lot which means the airline companies are making frequent money and the customers may go many time as a year with a low cost airline (Ryanair & easy jet) making it affordable to fly out to the destination where the holiday home is many times a year. However there is a negative side to holiday home ownership. This is the accommodation providers have less people booking places to stay whilst on holiday as people will only go to and stay in their holiday home. The other negative impact for accommodation providers is the holiday home owners may rent the place out during seasons where there is a high demand o when they are not there as it may work out cheaper for holiday makers to stay in a place such as a villa instead of a hotel. France has overtaken Spain as the most popular to country to own as there easier access from the UK by all kinds of transport (road, rail, sea and air). In 2006, 385,000 Britons owned holiday homes. This figure suddenly rose in 2010 by a dramatic 45,000 to 430,000.

Growth and expansion of regional airports
The final trend is Growth and expansion of regional airports. The CAA did a survey and 95 million tourists went on a holiday from a regional airport. People may not want to fly out from a major airport such as London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Stansted and London city; this is because they may be far away from where they holiday makers live or are more scared about a higher chance of terrorism in a major airport. There are many regional airports in the London surrounding area and are easier accessible, the flights may also be cheaper when flying out of a regional airport because the airline company does not have to pay as much to have spaces on the runaways allowing the customers to get on the plane. People are more likely to fly out of a regional airport if they are going for a domestic trip as it may work out cheaper and more time beneficial.

Natural disasters
Health warnings is the final factor, tourists will not go to a country where there is diseases such as cholera and typhoid (due to the locals defecating in the river which is the water supply) and may catch it if the dirty water is drunk or even if the food is washed in it.

Terrorism
Terrorism is when the use of force or violence against a person or property for the purpose of intimidation. Terrorism is major factor in recent years determining the choice of tourist destinations for many people. Terrorism is a factor due to it putting tourists off visiting the country or place where there has been or there is predicted to be an act of terrorism not matter the seriousness.

Health Warnings
Health warnings is the final factor, tourists will not go to a country where there is diseases such as cholera and typhoid (due to the locals defecating in the river which is the water supply) and may catch it if the dirty water is drunk or even if the food is washed in it.
