Assignment One - P1, P2, M1 & D1


  • P1 - Outline passenger transport operations within the UK
  • P2 - Describe significant developments and factors affecting and influencing passenger transport within the UK
  • M1 - Explain how the UK passenger transport industries have responded to developments and factors 
  • D1 - Analyse how key factors are likely to impact on future passenger transport operations in the UK


Assignment Two - P3 & M2

  • P3 - Identify relationships between UK passenger transport networks and travel and tourism component industries 
  • M2 - Explain how UK passenger transport networks work with travel and tourism component industries

  • P4 - Explain how passenger transport provision can influence the popularity and appeal of UK tourist destinations

UK Passenger Transport 
  • Scheduled Domestic Flights 
  • Rail 
  • Bus and Coach - National and Local 
  • Transfers 
  • Domestic Ferries 
  • River Bus 
  • Other Providers - Park and Ride, Airports and Network Rail 

Scheduled Domestic Flights 
are planes that fly within the UK using a timetable 

Rail 
  • Local - Overground rail services that are found within a county, city or town 
  • National - Overground rail services that run long distances across Britain 
  • Light Rail - Lower capacity and lower speed trains that have higher capacity and higher speed than trains
  • Underground -Trains that run underground but sometimes come to the surface 
  • Tram - Is a passenger rail vehicle which runs on tracks along public urban streets 

Bus and Coach - National and Local 
  • Local bus services operate within the local area
  • National bus services operate across the UK
Transfers 
Cars, buses that operate to pick people around town or from one town to another 

Domestic ferries 
A form of transportation, usually a boat or ship, used to carry passengers and sometimes vehicles

River Bus
A type of boat that can carry about 100 people or less. It transports people from one place to another via water

Other Providers

Park and Ride 
Are car parks with connections to public transport that allows commuters and other people wishing to travel into small city centres to park their cars and transfers onto a bus 

Airports 
Buildings with facilities to provide air passenger services for people coming and going in and outside the UK

Network Rail 
Managed by the government to provide maintenance services to stations and rail lines 

Two: Features of Transport 
  • Differing Cost - rail, coach and air 
  • Value for Money 
  • Classes available - planes (1st class, Business and Economy)
  • Facilities provided - onboard: catering, Wi-Fi, Toilets and Pre-assigned Seats. At terminals: Toilets, Wi-Fi and Shops
  • Accessibility - Lifts and Escalators 
  • Comfort
  • Convenience 
Three: Transport Operations
  • Private Sector - Most of the transport operators are within this sector. They make profit from providing their services
  • Public Sector - Government provide support to the private operators . National rail manages all the 28 train companies in the UK. CAA also manages some of the airports in the UK to make sure airports and airlines are safe
  • Non-Profit Sector - Setup to provide community transport services mostly buses and not to make profit 
Four: Regulatory Organisations
  • Government Departments and Agencies - Helps to pass laws and regulate the transport organisations in the UK: Department for Transport and Traffic Commissioners 
  • Regulatory Bodies - They regulate the airline and rail companies to make sure their operating safely: CAA and ORR
  • Other Bodies - Such as non profit organisations are set up to help passengers by negotiating issues regarding transport with the government. Passenger groups (focus) and air traffic control also makes sure UK air space is safe
Five: Role of Regulators 
  • Maintaining Health and Safety 
  • Ensuring Compliance with Law 
  • Improving Transport Infrastructure 
  • Improving Service Levels
